I was starting to having withdrawals from lack of Vegan Stoner new recipes ...but the wait was totally worth. This is such a clever way to enjoy falafel without the need of deep-frying. As usual, you guys are awesome!
considering the fact that i LOVE all things chickpea- hummus, socca, falafel..this pie looks amazing! i've never seen falafel mix before though, so i will definitely be keeping an eye out for that next time i am food shopping.
i wish i could pin these recipes to pinterest! i used to be able to, but now when i try, it says that it can't detect an image on the pg. either way, thanks for these fantastic and creative recipes. :)
Wow this looks sooo good! I love this blog!! Please keep the recipes coming next time some fucktard asks me "So what do you eat, salad?" I'm just going to direct them to this site. :)
I just tried the boxed falafel mix for the first time a few weeks ago and really enjoyed the flavors. I would have loved a baked alternative but I don't know enough to guess these things. I will be making this! Thanks so much.
Not a vegan, but a friend of mine is vegan and directed me to this site and OH MY GAWSH I love it. Just made this pie and crammed it in my gob as fast as I could. Om nom nom. SO delicious. Thank you so very much. =)
Hi mitchfree — our comments don't allow images, but we copied/pasted your link and really enjoyed it. Here's a link for everyone else who wants to see your stopmotion of the making of a falafel pie: mitchfree's falafel pie
I made this recipe last night, and we ate the left overs tonight,it was even better,we ate it on a pile of baby greens and it was so easy on a busy night. I will be making this again with a few of your other easy and very tasty looking recipes!
Sooo I wonder what would happen if you tried using pita bread as like a "crust" base for this... You think it would work or possibly burn on the bottom?
So, I made this and it tasted wonderful but my base was nothing but crumbly. Yours looks almost cake like. Mine did not hold together at all. Maybe I got old mix. I purchased it out of the bulk bin. I know I measured correctly. Is there a certain brand that works best? I would definitely make this again with a different falafel mix.
My husband just made this, delicious but not as good looking as yours. Major shoutout and link to your blog on my blog http://gigi-2boomers.blogspot.com/2012/05/crazy-boy-cooks.html Thanx so much.
Brilliant! Will be making today to take to a party; but I have a feeling the real party will be in my mouth; can't wait to eat it! YUM! Love your recipes and graphics!
Just made it and it is awesome and so simple. It seems usually if its vegan its a pain in the bottom to make, but this site offers so many easy recipes. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
I have made this recipe twice in the past two weeks and it is incredible! I'm not a vegan but looking for ways to incorporate more vegan meals into my diet so thank you for the simple ideas. Please make a t-shirt - I would definitely buy one.
I'm an Orthodox Christian and we have a vegan fast 2x per week. This is perfect fasting food. Thanx for the recipes I can't wait to try more. Two thumbs up!
This was good, but my pie was completely crumbly. It did not set at all. I think next time I'll try another type of falafel mix and maybe mix in some fat to help it stick together. Even with it being a crumbly mess, it was quite tasty
Hmm...mine was good, but looked NOTHING like yours. What size baking dish did you use? I used a 9" round stone baker. I also used greek yogurt instead of soy yogurt, and my topping was sooo runny. :/ Still tasted good though!
Falafel as pie crust, way clever! I tried this tonight and it's super tasty. I gotta work on the cucumber "yogurt" tho. Mine was pretty runny. Thanks for sharing the great idea.
We used a 9" pie pan as well, however we may have baked it longer and we really packed it down tight.
Try adding a little flour next time to the falafel mix to harden it a little more. Try placing the yogurt and some vegetables in a blender then blend till thick.
I think I would let the falafel mix sit mixed with the water for at least 15 min before baking it. That way it would be less crumbly and easier on the digestion.
Ok, I perhaps should try it first before commenting, oh well...
Great recipe, thanks! Had I read the comments first I would have known to pack down the falafel mixture into the pan and set before baking as mine was crumbly. So, I improvised. Imixed up the crumbly falafel with the hummus and spooned onto dish, and then topped with chopped cucumber, tomato and olives. No soy yogurt on hand, so I topped with a dollop of soy sour cream and the whole thing was attractive and delicious. Thanks for your recipes!!!
I made this for my meat-eating bf and he LOVED it! He insisted that we have to make it again and again. And again. Thanks so much! I never would have thought to bake falafel.
Last week, I have tried Falafel for the first time in my life at Mediterranean Restaurant in Chicago “I Dream of Falafel” and believe me it was outstanding no words to describe the taste of that Falafel.
Thanks for sharing this recipe I must try by myself :-)
Made this the other night. Put feta on half of it for the non-vegans, and it was wonderful. Everyone loved it, except my little "anti-falafel" daughter. :) Will definitely be making it again and again - what a simple recipe. Thank you!
Good stuff. Made last night. Believe it or not our WF did not have soy yogurt so I had to use coconut yogurt and make my own falafel with the chickpea flour from Red Mill (just used the recipe on the side of the bag). Delicious! Love your site.
Made this last night and it was delicious! Used coconut yogurt instead and it worked like a charm. Thanks for the recipe, I will be making it again and again :)
I'm sorry to ask this, but where is the pie (crust) recipe? I don't see it on the page at all! I suppose this recipe could be made as a sandwich, using pita or other bread? Thank you!
Made this on the weekend, and it was totally YUMMY! Added parsley to the yogurt sauce, and next time will also add mint. This is so much easier to make/eat than the falafel in a pita thing I've been doing for years. Love your site!
Made this with blended, light tasting tofu instead of soy yogurt which works just as well and is how I usually make my tzatziki anyway. Really love this recipe. The combo of slathered hummus and olives is divine.
For some reason, I couldn't find PLAIN soy yogurt, so I got vanilla. It worked! This was so easy. I made homemade hummus for it (I had A TON of dry chickpeas), which came out great. I'm very picky when it comes to falafel. This was amazing! Thank you for sharing this recipe! I ended up eating over half of it before my gf got to it... I guess I was hungry. ;)
I made this recently. It was really good! The yogurt mixture was a bit too runny I think but very good. I made it vegitarian not vegan. But inmade a 1:30 vid here is what the process looks like https://www.facebook.com/simon.scher/posts/879779258378
This was extremely simple and delicious! I brought it to a small gathering and we all ate it as kind of a dip. I had like four servings because it's irresistible!

Best served when you have friends over, I suspect. If I cooked this, I would eat the whole thing unless I had some competition!

Should it be baked twice? Or, just the falafel-layer?
Hi Anonymous. We didn't bake it twice — but let us know how it comes out if you do!
Wow this looks sooo good!
I love this blog!! Please keep the recipes coming next time some fucktard asks me "So what do you eat, salad?" I'm just going to direct them to this site. :)

My homemade falafel attempt was a huge fail!
Not a vegan, but a friend of mine is vegan and directed me to this site and OH MY GAWSH I love it. Just made this pie and crammed it in my gob as fast as I could. Om nom nom. SO delicious. Thank you so very much. =)

Num. Just made this -- a definite hit. I will add red onion next time, but that's just me. I really enjoyed it, thank you for your great blog!
I'd crawl across the desert for this falafel pie. Does it come with water?
I am in love. This is my new favorite blog!
Great blog...thanks.
Sooo I wonder what would happen if you tried using pita bread as like a "crust" base for this... You think it would work or possibly burn on the bottom?
No, I make pita pizzas all the time! It definitely wouldn't burn as long as you keep the oven temp under 400
I tried this... I really thought the base would crumble but it didn't .. wonderful and thank you !
love love love the site!

Thank you for this!

Any tips for it not crumbling when you slice it and remove it from the pie pan?
jennilee,
Using a triangle-shaped pie server will probably pull the slices out much cleaner than forks and knives.
Just found your blog. Love the simplicity. Adding to bookmark stat.
Super, super fab!
This was good, but my pie was completely crumbly. It did not set at all. I think next time I'll try another type of falafel mix and maybe mix in some fat to help it stick together. Even with it being a crumbly mess, it was quite tasty
Nice one; Love your work!
Hmm...mine was good, but looked NOTHING like yours. What size baking dish did you use? I used a 9" round stone baker. I also used greek yogurt instead of soy yogurt, and my topping was sooo runny. :/ Still tasted good though!
Great recipe. I had no left-overs. The kids inhaled it. LOL.
Falafel as pie crust, way clever! I tried this tonight and it's super tasty. I gotta work on the cucumber "yogurt" tho. Mine was pretty runny. Thanks for sharing the great idea.
Made it tonight.....Delish! I used vegan sour cream instead of soy yogurt. Very tasty....Thanks for the recipe :)
this was delicious. i didn't have any yogurt, so i just mixed veganaise with deliciously dill seasoning and had a little bit of that on the side.
OMG! I'm SO glad I found you!
Hi Casey,
We used a 9" pie pan as well, however we may have baked it longer and we really packed it down tight.

Hope this helps.

excellent idea! I always hated rock hard falafel balls...this puts it to much better use!
Great recipe, thanks! Had I read the comments first I would have known to pack down the falafel mixture into the pan and set before baking as mine was crumbly. So, I improvised. I tweaked this recipe a little bit but I love love love this recipe! Instant favorite!

Just much bloody hommus mate
Soooo we used too much yogurt I guess so we just thickened it with saltines ...
Made this last night and it was delicious! Used coconut yogurt instead and it worked like a charm. Thanks for the recipe, I will be making it again and again :)
never mind the olives, i think i could manage TWO pieces of that pie!
I added a layer of tabouli :) Yummmmmmmmmmmm
This recipe is a real hit at American football tailgate parties! I'm asked to bring it every time!
I'm sorry to ask this, but where is the pie (crust) recipe? I don't see it on the page at all!
I suppose this recipe could be made as a sandwich, using pita or other bread?
Thank you!
Hi Anonymous,
The falafel mix IS the pie crust! If you bake it just right it works surprisingly well.
Let us know if it works out for you.
Made this on the weekend, and it was totally YUMMY! Added parsley to the yogurt sauce, and next time will also add mint. This is so much easier to make/eat than the falafel in a pita thing I've been doing for years. Love your site!
